Late blight of potato
Symptom
This disease is caused by fungi that are dispersed through wind and water. Initial symptoms appear as water-soaked spots on the leaves. These spots change color within a few days depending on weather conditions turning yellowish-brown during dry periods or dark brown to purplish-black under humid conditions. In the early morning, white fungal mycelium and spores can often be observed on the underside of affected leaves. In severe infections, the leaves may blacken, dry out, and die. Stems and petioles also darken, and infected tubers may develop irregular, dark brown to purplish lesions that can lead to decay. Timely preventative measures are essential, as the disease is more prevalent during the rainy season or in prolonged periods of high humidity.
